Corrections

What we got wrong, what we changed and when. A dated log of substantive fixes to our Hawaiʻi diving guides.

Best Diving Hawaiʻi · Updated October 2026 · How we research

This page lists substantive corrections to Best Diving Hawaiʻi: places where a fact was wrong, a rule had changed or an experience was misdescribed. We keep it so readers can see what changed and when. Small fixes, such as typos, broken links and formatting, are made without an entry here.

Corrections are made under our editorial policy. If you find something wrong, please tell us through the contact page, with the page address and, if you can, a link to the official source.

Correction Log

DateWhereWhat changed
Oct 11, 2026Homepage, Oʻahu and Maui pagesThe Corsair plane wreck was listed as a Maui dive. It lies off east Oʻahu. Corrected wherever it appeared.
Oct 11, 2026Homepage, Oʻahu, ExperiencesThe North Shore shark trips from Haleʻiwa were described as a cage-free scuba dive at about 30 feet requiring Open Water certification. They are surface cage or snorkel tours about three miles offshore in water more than 250 feet deep, and no scuba is involved. Corrected, and the Oʻahu page now explains the difference.
Oct 11, 2026Homepage, OʻahuHanauma Bay was presented as a beginner scuba and Discover Scuba site. It is a city-run preserve and MLCD with reservations, closures on Mondays and Tuesdays and regulated commercial scuba; for nearly all visitors it is a snorkel site. Corrected.
Oct 11, 2026Homepage, MauiMolokini's distance from Maui was given as 2.5 miles and its outer wall as dropping 300+ feet. The state Division of Aquatic Resources describes it as about 3 miles off the southwest coast, with the outer face dropping past 200 feet. Updated to the state's figures.
Oct 11, 2026HomepageThe manta ray in the marine-life panel was labeled Mobula birostris (oceanic manta). The Kona night-dive mantas are reef mantas, Mobula alfredi. Corrected.
Oct 11, 2026HomepageThe blackwater night-dive card stated a specific depth and distance above the seafloor that we could not confirm. Replaced with a general description.
Oct 11, 2026Oʻahu dive shopsThe seasonal note said the south shore was most protected in summer. It is the reverse: the south shore is sheltered from winter's North Pacific swell and takes south swells in summer. Corrected.
Oct 11, 2026Dive shops pagesRemoved an unsourced price range for boat dives and several unverifiable claims about operators (ratings, certification counts, safety records). Listings are now descriptive only.
Oct 11, 2026Maui pagesMolokini was described as a "marine sanctuary" with a specific fish-species count we could not source. It is a state Marine Life Conservation District; updated.
Oct 11, 2026Maui dive shopsAdded the status of Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, which reopened to limited daytime commercial operations on December 15, 2025, after the 2023 fire.
Oct 11, 2026Island dive-site pagesRewrote each site description against state and published dive sources and added depth ranges, entry, certification, protected status, access, county ocean safety and season notes, with sources listed.

How We Handle a Reported Error

  1. Check the source. We look for the official or published source behind the claim: a DLNR rule, a county ordinance, a National Weather Service criterion, a National Park Service page or an established dive publication.
  2. Fix the page. If the page is wrong, we correct it, update the "Updated" date and adjust the sources list.
  3. Fix related pages. Many facts appear in more than one place on the site, such as a site's depth on an island page, in the Dive Site Finder and on the homepage. We search the site and correct every instance.
  4. Log it. Substantive corrections are added to the table above with the date.

What Counts as Substantive

  • A wrong location, depth range, entry type or certification level for a dive site.
  • A rule, law, closure or reservation requirement that is wrong or has changed.
  • An experience described in a way that would mislead someone booking it.
  • A claim that could not be supported by a source when we checked.

Opinions, such as which site we think suits a beginner, are not corrections, but we are always glad to hear a well-argued case.
